Serial Number Tracking White Papers: How to Manage and Monitor Your Inventory with Precision

If you purchased your software through Adobe Buying Programs (from the Adobe Business Store or an Adobe reseller), your serial number is available in the LWS. Serial numbers are sometimes called activation codes, activation keys, or key codes.

When you buy software through Adobe Buying Programs, Adobe sends a confirmation email to the person listed on the purchase order. If it's your first time using volume licensing, Adobe also sends a welcome message with sign-in information. You then can access your serial numbers and download your software from the LWS.


All TLP and FLP orders, and any CLP orders placed after 14 October 2009, include a license certificate that includes order information. This information includes the end-user name, Deploy-to ID, purchase order number, order number, and serial number.


In the diagram below, a command in Powershell lists some values regarding the above two USB devices. Clearly, what we have been calling the serial number does not conflate with what the identification in Powershell calls a serial number.


I tried the setup on a different computer we will call Computer 2. As if by magic, GSmartControl now showed me all of the correct information including serial number. Well now I have even bigger problems. Why would it work properly on Computer 2 but not Computer 1? What does the computer have to do with it?


Use serial numbers to track inventory. Oracle embeds serial numbers in firmware, on option cards, and system motherboards. You can read these serial numbers through local area network (LAN) connections.

Suitable identification. To know if a product has been tested or not, you need to know the identification of a product (such as a serial number and part number) to determine its conformity. You then you need a suitable way of marking this identification for the product.


Identification & traceability. When you need to know traceability for outputs, you need to properly identify these outputs so that you can keep track of what went into them. This could be a serial number, batch, or other method of identification that allows you to trace what parts, processes, materials, etc. went into the product or service.


Legal requirements. Certain parts of the aerospace industry have legal requirements for traceability. For instance, the aircraft industry needs to be able to precisely track what serial numbers of each part are included on an aircraft at any given time. This traceability needs to extend right down to the raw materials used for each individual part. The reason for this is that, if it is found that a particular part is faulty and caused (or potentially could cause) an aircraft disaster, they need to be able to find out which parts on other aircraft could be affected. So, this requirement extends to knowing exactly which parts are made from the same batch of material.


Customer requirements. Whether a legal requirement exists or not, customers will very often tell you exactly what is needed in your contract. This will include the type of traceability needed, such as forward traceability (the ability to know the final units that contain everything from a batch of a certain product), backwards traceability (knowing all of the information such as batches and serial numbers for everything that is used in a product), or both. These customer requirements will also include additional information such as the delivery of the traceability information and the retention times for the traceability records.


Serial Number tracking allows you to specify if a part is to be tracked. You have the ability to specify a formula for the construction of a serial number, this can be a global setting or based per part.From job management integrated through shipments serial number control is available and allows you to select the serial numbers used on the transaction. The packing slip and invoice can even be printed with or without showing serial numbers to ensure total traceability. The serial number explorer shows various information about the serial number including when it was created, what job or receipt created it, what job issue or shipment used it, and what the current status of the serial number is.


The final rule will also help turn some ghost guns already in circulation into serialized firearms. Through this rule, the Justice Department is requiring federally licensed dealers and gunsmiths taking any unserialized firearm into inventory to serialize that weapon. For example, if an individual builds a firearm at home and then sells it to a pawn broker or another federally licensed dealer, that dealer must put a serial number on the weapon before selling it to a customer. This requirement will apply regardless of how the firearm was made, meaning it includes ghost guns made from individual parts, kits, or by 3D-printers.


Inventory tracking is an essential part of any operation dealing with the sale of goods. Often inventory tracking will involve serial numbers to help identify the age of a product, specific components, origins, traceability, and other factors. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is an ERP that, among many things, helps to optimize inventory and supply chain management.


Business Central enables companies to track a single serial number associated with a product. For those in manufacturing or are assembling products, tracking a single serial number may be limiting. What if you have sub-components with serial numbers that are part of an overall product? Articles 16, 22 and 23 of the FMD regulation affect companies responsible for pharmaceutical distribution in the EU and require decommissioning and reporting of serial numbers for products that have left the supply without being dispensed.


There are also requirements around serial number status changes. The normal path of distribution is defined as product moving from the manufacturer to wholesaler/3PL and then pharmacy or point of dispense where the product is decommissioned from the supply chain. If, when travelling along this path, a product has been damaged or locked for investigation, its serial number status must be changed in the respective NMVS. This can also occur if a product was incorrectly reported to the NMVS, in which case an organization will have ten business days to make the correction to the appropriate government system.


An application that can layer serialization requirements alongside a warehouse management system, rather than embed them into one, would allow for real-time information scanning. When product is scanned, data capture is automated and this greatly reduces or eliminates the potential of errors, for example, capturing the wrong serial number. Additionally, a solution that can run on any mobile device will streamline processes and increase business efficiencies.

As mobile and wearable devices shrink in size, so do the components that go into them, including barcode labels used for traceability and process control during the assembly process. Manufacturers can experience losses every year when inaccurate parts are assembled and wrong operations are performed on assembly lines with thousands of different intermixed part numbers.
